Most people quoting your job cannot do all of it
When you send out an enquiry for a worn shaft, a stillage insert overhaul or a set of access steps, look at who comes back.
One is a distributor. They do not make anything. They pass your drawing to somebody else and add a margin.
One is a machine shop. They can turn and mill, but they cannot fabricate, so anything with a welded frame goes out to a third party.
One is a fabricator. They can weld all day, but the bearing housing bore goes down the road to a machine shop.
Every one of those handovers is a van, a booking-in, a queue at the other end and a phone call to find out where it is. Call it a week each time. On a three-stage job you have lost a fortnight before anyone touched a machine.
We are set up so that does not happen. Design, machining, fabrication, repair and site work all happen in our own building on Astonfields Industrial Estate in Stafford. The part does not leave. When the fabricator needs a word with the machinist he walks across the shop.
The actual range of work
We are a small team, so we will tell you plainly what comes through the door.
Stillages. This is our biggest single category by some distance. New bespoke stillages, stillage repair, and above all stillage insert overhaul: the internal frames and formers that hold the part inside a returnable steel stillage. We overhaul these in volume across manufacturers’ returnable fleets.
Repair and overhaul. The second biggest theme, and most of the rest of this list sits under it.
Shafts. Shredder and rotor shaft repair, including car shredder shafts up to three metres.
Shredder cages. Tiger cages, made thicker and sized to the material you actually run.
Rotors. Hammer mill rotor overhaul and rebuild.
Drivetrain. Gearboxes, gearcases, flywheels and pump drives.
Rotating and conveying plant. Augers, drums, rollers, conveyors and screws.
Motors. Electric motors and pump motors.
Separation. Trommels and screens made to spec.
Stainless steel fabrication.
Precision machining and one-off parts, including emergency machining when a plant is down and there is no part to buy.
Access and safety. Steel staircases, access solutions, walkways, safety barriers and guarding.
Site work. Surveys, installations and breakdown attendance.

The people who ring us are maintenance managers, engineering managers, production managers and supply chain buyers. Different job titles, usually the same problem: something has worn out or broken, it was needed yesterday, and the obvious replacement route is either too slow or does not exist any more.
